New Races Lafonisios 2024

ROUTES:

For 2024, the 200th anniversary of the Lafonisi massacre, we have designed 3 routes with various reference points, dedicated to the historical events of Easter 1824.

1. ROAD RACE 18,4 Km (Running with timing)

RACE ROUTE: KERAMOTI – LIVADIA – STOMIO – CHRYSOSKALITISA – LAFONISI

Reference point: The Elf Cave

In the coastal area of ​​Keramoti, among rocks, gravels and bushes, there is the cave known as "Xoticospilio" (“The Elf Cave”). Its entrance looks like an open funnel inwards, while its walls are rocks that in many places they look as if they were chiseled. The central entrance is about 2 meters wide and leads to the main area where clean water drips without creating stalagmites.

In earlier years, during the Venetian and Turkish occupations, residents of the area often hid here and were saved.

2. RACE 6 Km (Running or Walking with timing)

ROUTE OF THE RACE: CHRYSOSKALITISSA - LAFONISSI

Reference Point: Chrysoskalitissa Monastery

The monastery is built in the form of a fortress, perched on a 35 meter rock with an unlimited view of the sea. In the 1637 census, it is mentioned as Panagia Gounoskalitissa by the priest of the village of Kuneni (today's Vathi). The exact date of the foundation of the monastery is not known, but it is assumed that it is placed in the years of the late Venetian rule, around 1500.

3. HIKING ROUTE - EXCURSION 4 Km

ROUTE: LAFONISI MONUMENT – LAFONISI ISLAND (TOURKAULAKO) – LAFONISI MONUMENT

Reference Point: Tourkaulakos - Lafonisiou Island

In Lafonisi, on Sunday 24 April 24 1824, the day of Easter, the Turkish troops arrived. On the island there were 40 warriors and 600-850 women and children predominately from the Ennia Xoria (“Nine Villages”), but also from Selino.

All of them were waiting for a ship to be saved. The Turks found the shallow passage probably guided by the footprints left on the sand by the Christians who passed through Lafonisi.

Finishing point for the Races is the monument at Lafonissi beach.

The anniversary Lafonisios road offers a unique experience for the participants.

Each route offers a unique participation kit for participants. The athletes of the first (18.4km) and second route (6km) will receive the anniversary t-shirt, the anniversary medal and the bag.
